Southwest Division

Southwest Division was created in May of 2007 and it is the newest of the five response divisions within the Edmonton Police Service. The division provides policing services to residents of Southwest Edmonton, as well as residents of West Edmonton that reside in the areas south of Whitemud Drive.

Within the first six months of 2010, Southwest Division experienced a high degree of success in terms of crime reduction, with a 20.2% decrease in the eight crime indicators used to measure our performance. These eight crime indicators include violent crimes such as: homicide, robbery, sexual offences and assaults; but, it also includes property crime such as break and enter, theft from auto, theft of auto and theft over $5,000.

Working in the Community

It takes a great deal of hard work by many dedicated police officers and support personnel in order to accomplish the successful crime reduction rates. However, this success also requires the support of the community, particularly in terms of individual residents taking the time to make themselves, and their property, less vulnerable to crime.

With that in mind, residents of Southwest Division can play a major role in helping to achieve further reductions in crime through a number of simple and straightforward steps:

  • Lock your vehicle when it is unattended and remove all valuables. This will help to further reduce the chance of theft from vehicle.
  • Do not leave a running vehicle unattended. Do not keep spare keys hidden in your parked vehicle. This will help to further reduce the incidence of theft of auto.
  • Take the time to make your residence more secure. This will help to further reduce the incidence of break and enter.
  • Be aware of what is going on in your neighbourhood. If you observe suspicious activity, contact police. There are many occasions where citizens have done just that and it has allowed police to effectively deal with crimes in progress.
  • Become familiar with what crimes are happening within your community. Use the Neighbourhood Crime Mapping tool to keep you informed.
  • For members of the Callingwood Community, become involved with the Neighbourhood Empowerment Teams to assist in crime prevention and reduction.

The police officers of Southwest Division are committed to delivering high quality policing services. If you would like to learn more about police activities in your specific district, please take the time to view the Southwest Division district pages (below).
