As well as the active residential communities, the district includes the iconic area of Whyte Avenue. This is where shoppers can browse the selection of retail stores, enjoy the restaurants, coffee shops, and experience the vibrant night life. The area is also host to the Edmonton Fringe Festival every August in addition to the range of music arts and theatre destinations that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

Off Whyte Avenue, the district is also characterized by the University of Alberta campus and the University of Alberta Hospital that sit along the banks of the beautiful urban green space of the river valley that is enjoyed by runners and cyclists throughout the year.

Community Initiatives

Your District C1 members are Community Sergeant, Sgt. Brenda DALZIEL and Community Liaison Constable, Cst. Ian McFATRIDGE. Together C1 members, Beat members, and patrol share information in a collaborative effort to identify and target problem individuals and problem areas with the overall goal of reducing crime.

In 2010, some of the more common crime types for the area include: Theft from Auto, Theft of Auto, residential break and enter and garage break and enters (Garage Security). With the coordinated efforts of C1 members and proactive policing efforts by patrol in the C1 communities, there has been a 2011 divisional year-to-date reduction of 15 per cent in the eight crime indicators.

In collaboration with members from the Community Police Radio Network (C.P.R.N.), police and members of the community are able to reduce crime by focusing on areas that have been identified as hot spots. Within C1 the Community Sergeant and Community Liaison Constable have recognized the value of crime prevention and proactive policing efforts in order to provide public safety and quality of life. It is along this balance of police efforts of prevention and response that we see the greatest opportunity to create value through partnerships with members of the community.
