Credit cards have the greatest risk of being compromised. For example, it could happen if a waiter at a restaurant has a handheld skimmer or a cab driver has a carbon imprint of your card. More people are also banking and shopping online. Though the risks are higher, individuals who bank online are more likely to catch frauds earlier.
To protect your credit card:
- Check your statement monthly
- Notify your credit card company in advance if you are traveling
- Consider having your card numbers and the lost/stolen phone numbers recorded
- Do your online banking and shopping at secure computers only
To protect your debit card:
- Use your hand to cover the number pad when you’re entering your PIN
- Do not give your PIN to anyone or write it on the card
- Watch for people who are trying to look over your shoulder
