Special Event Policing

The Special Events Policing Unit provides services to special event organizers in the community by assisting with security, staffing deployment, and traffic control for special events. They also handle Special Roadway Event permits and the signing of Liquor Licences. Appointments need to be made in advance to obtain a Special Roadway Event permit or to have your Liquor Licence signed.

Special events policing assignments are applicable not only to private and for-profit events, but also to charitable events and city-sponsored events. Advance notice of 30 days is required for all events. Examples include parades or roadway events, festivals, civic celebrations, and major international sporting events (unless policing is covered directly in the corporate budget). Special Events can be a one time, annual or infrequent occurring activity that take place within facilities operated in the city of Edmonton.

Special Events include:

  • dances,
  • concerts,
  • sporting events,
  • point duty (e.g. marathons or triathlons)
  • movie locations,
  • bank moves,
  • fundraising drives,
  • security of cash or valuables,
  • parade escorts and crowd control, and
  • any other special event deemed appropriate by the police service.

Fees

The special duty hourly client charge rates (for uniformed officers) are as follows:

  • Constable $82.00
  • Sergeant $94.00
  • Staff Sergeant $102.00

These rates were established to ensure all direct and indirect expenses related to Special Event Policing were being managed appropriately. The EPS is now in line with other Special Event Policing Units in major cities across the country.

Payment will be required up front for new events and/or new clients. Payment options for special duty assignments include: any of the three major credit cards, cash, certified cheque and debit.

Risk Assessments

Risk assessments have been implemented as part of the initial planning process for each client’s request. A comprehensive on-line application form has been developed to obtain important information from our clients to aid in the pre-event planning process. We also ask our clients to complete a post-event questionnaire to assist in identifying any changes that may assist in enhancing safety and service delivery for future events.

Applications made by licensed premises will be reviewed case-by-case, taking into account the value to the community and the safety of the officers.

For further information on the conditions for requesting off-duty police service, please contact the Special Events Safety office.

Applying for Special Event Policing Services

In order to facilitate the planning process, and scheduling demands for special event policing, applications for services must be received by the Special Events Policing Unit no later than 30 days prior to the commencement of an event.

Timely submission of your application enables the police to provide you with more comprehensive support and advice to enhance public safety at your event. Disclosing accurate information is an important aspect of the risk assessment process that will aid in identifying the number of officers required for your event, and the manner in which the officers will be deployed.

Application for services can be made by completing an online Special Events Policing Application form.

The online application process will require that you complete the entirety of the application once you begin filling out the form. It is recommended that you review the form and identify the information you will be required to submit prior to completing your application. You may also print a copy of the Special Events Application Information sheet to assist you in filling out the form.

For further information on the conditions for requesting off-duty police service or completing the online application form, please contact the Special Events Policing office.
