Edmonton Police Service traffic enforcement squads zeroed in on speeding offences citywide during January’s Operation 24 Hours blitz.
“It’s hard to believe that there’s a downside to the unseasonably warm winter that we are having,” said Staff Sgt. Ted Hrebien, of EPS Traffic Section. “But the warm weather and dry road conditions are making it much easier for motorists to speed. Compared to last January’s enforcement efforts when there was plenty of snow, we went from 210 tickets in 2011 to 1,280 in 2012.”
In the 24-hour period of the enforcement campaign starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, the EPS recorded 1,280 speeding violations, compared to 1,105 speeding violations in December. A total of 302 other offences were also recorded including distracted driving, seatbelt infractions, traffic safety violations, and criminal code violations / outstanding warrants. There was a grand total of 1,582 violations for January compared to 1,484 violations for December.
Operation 24 Hours is one of the EPS Traffic Section’s many educational and enforcement initiatives that take place throughout the year to improve traffic safety in the city.
