PSD Cora will be back to work next month

Police Service Dog Cora is on the mend and is expected back at work next month.

The courageous canine was put on the injured list after being stabbed by a suspect during a foot chase last month. She was treated for two serious injuries to her head, and is recovering nicely at home.

“If her recovery continues at this rate, we hope to have Cora back doing what she loves by February 3” says EPS Canine Unit Sgt. Tom Pallas.

Background

Shortly after 8 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28 Cst. Darren Smith and Police Service Dog Cora responded to a criminal flight call near St. Albert Trail and Yellowhead Trail. The driver of the fleeing vehicle collided with a light standard and fled into the nearby residential neighborhood on foot.

Cst. Smith and PSD Cora were hot on his heels and a foot chase quickly ensued. PSD Cora caught up to the suspect and initiated the arrest. The suspect produced a weapon and stabbed Cora with it several times. He was brought under control and placed under arrest.

Cora was rushed to a nearby Vet and was treated for two serious injuries to her head.
