On Monday, October 26, the Curb the Danger program turns three-years-old. The program started as a three month pilot project and has grown from there.
The program encourages people to call 9-1-1 when they spot someone they suspect is driving while impaired.
The program has caught on with the citizens of Edmonton.
“What this program does is involve the citizens of Edmonton. They have the ability by calling police to do their part in getting potential impaired drivers off the road,” says Barney Stevens, coordinator of the CTD program. “The Edmonton Police Service is doing what it can to deal with impaired drivers; however, they can’t deal with this issue alone. They need the citizens to support them and they have been doing that.”
Since the program started in 2006, there have been 26,616 calls to Curb the Danger. Of those there were 7,973 vehicles intercepted, 2,551 impaired charges laid, 816, 24-hour suspensions and 5,927 letters issued.
