Edmonton beats Calgary in Sirens for Life blood battle

08-Feb-2012

Edmonton has reclaimed the prize of Sirens for Life champion in the 10th annual inter-city blood donor challenge.

A hard fought battle throughout the month of January, Edmonton took top spot with just 16 more donations than its competitor, Calgary.

Sirens for Life is a month-long challenge that pits emergency services teams from Calgary and Edmonton against each other to see which city can recruit the most blood donors in January. The challenge ran from Jan. 5 to Feb. 4.

Emergency services workers and Edmonton residents stepped up to the plate to take back the Sirens for Life title from the winner in 2011, Calgary. The two cities will face off again in January, 2013, to compete for the title of bloodiest city.

Here are the final results:
Calgary: 5,571 donations
Edmonton: 5,587 donations
Total: 11,158 donations

Canadian Blood Services thanks the Edmonton Police, Fire and EMS teams for their unwavering dedication to this partnership. A special thank you also goes out to Edmonton area residents who gave blood in support of this challenge.
