Intersection Safety Cameras

Edmonton's Red Light Camera program began in September 1999 with six cameras rotating through 12 locations. On January 1, 2009, provincial legislation was passed allowing police agencies in the province to use Intersection Safety Cameras (formally known as Red Light Cameras) to enforce both red light and speed infractions. In Edmonton, the Intersection Safety Cameras will capture red light violations and speed violations on any colour of light phase.

In 2010, in Edmonton there were 13,502 intersection collisions, of those there were 3,311 injury collisions which occurred in intersections and 13 fatal collisions. In Alberta in 2009, 57 people were killed and 7,820 more were injured in traffic collisions at intersections.

The key to reducing traffic violations is still increasing public awareness of the dangers of red light running and excessive speed through education and accepted enforcement techniques. The Edmonton Police Service emphasizes the Intersection Safety Cameras will supplement, not replace, regular enforcement activities by officers.

The Registered Owner is charged under Section 160(1) of the Traffic Safety Act which states, "If a vehicle is involved in an offence referred to in Section 157 or a bylaw, the owner of that vehicle is guilty of an offence." Because you are charged as the registered owner of the vehicle, and you have not been charged as a driver, a guilty plea will not result in any demerit points being assessed to your operator's license.
