Parent Parking Patrol (PPP) is a community-based program which targets daily traffic safety problems at Edmonton’s schools.
PPP helps concerned parents form a committee to eliminate traffic safety problems around their school. This program is flexible, allowing each school to address their specific needs and concerns. Many of the schools in Edmonton were designed years ago to meet lower pedestrian and traffic volumes. The large scale arrivals and departures of the expanded student population of the ‘90’s have resulted in increased pedestrian and vehicle congestion.
However, design problems are only a small part of the cause of traffic safety problems. The majority of traffic safety problems lie within violations caused by parents and students. Safety problems such as jay-walking, running between parked or stopped vehicles, illegal U-turns, parking and speeding can have catastrophic and sometimes fatal results.
