STOREWATCH Program

Recent changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act state that “Employers must do everything reasonable to protect the health and safety of employees.” This means that employers must set up safe work practices at the work site and that they are followed. STOREWATCH can assist you in making your workplace safer.

Crime is least likely to occur in a location where the owners/staff are alert to the potential of crime and willing to work closely with police. The STOREWATCH program focuses on three requirements for official STOREWATCH membership status:

• Your business must meet prescribed Video Recording Technology standards;
• Owners and employees must review supplied information on what to do before, during and after a robbery, and how to be a good witness; and
• Your business must be subjected to a no-charge Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessment and make specific improvements as required.

Through this collaborative effort, you can work towards “crime-proofing” your business using established and proven robbery prevention techniques while decreasing the chance of being a victim and increasing the solvability of a robbery at your location.
