Body found in fire ruled homicide, charges laid

Police have laid charges in the January death of Thomas Richard Russell, 32.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, Edmonton Fire Rescue called police to a suspicious fire at a residence in the area of 118 Avenue and 79 Street. During the investigation of the fire, a body was found inside the building.

A Jan. 25, 2022 autopsy completed by the Edmonton Medical Examiner identified the deceased as Thomas Richard Russell, 32. At the time, the cause and manner of death were pending additional testing.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner has since determined Russell’s death was a homicide. The cause of death is being withheld for investigative reasons, as EPS Homicide Section continues to investigate.

On July 7, 2022, Kody Shortneck, 28, was arrested and charged with kidnapping with a firearm, manslaughter with a firearm, interfere with a dead body, and arson.
