ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting following serious stabbing in West Edmonton

A 36-year-old male suspect sustained non-life-threatening injuries following an officer-involved shooting and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating.

On Friday, March 1, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., West Branch officers were dispatched to a reported assault outside a pub in the area of Winterburn Road and 107 Avenue. It was reported to police that a 36-year-old male suspect had stabbed another male and fled the scene in a truck. 

A short time later, it was reported that a civilian vehicle pursued the suspect and was subsequently rammed by the suspect’s truck. West Branch officers located the truck in the area of 98A Avenue and 178 Street where a confrontation occurred between the 36-year-old and police, resulting in an officer discharging their firearm. The suspect was struck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. He was treated and transported to hospital by paramedics. 

No EPS officers or civilians were injured during this dynamic incident. 

The man who was stabbed sustained serious injuries.

A 46.1 notification has since been provided to the Alberta Director of Law Enforcement, who has directed ASIRT to conduct an investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
