For Immediate Release: 20-Mar-2023 @ 4:30 PM
MRU #: H23R009-1

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 40-year-old suspect in relation to a death in northeast Edmonton earlier this month.

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, at approximately 2:30 a.m., police responded to the report of a single vehicle collision in an alley in the area of 47 Street and 118 Avenue. Upon arrival, the vehicle was located with an injured 44-year-old male in the driver’s seat. EMS and EFD responded and attempted life-saving measures however the male succumbed to his injuries on scene. Further investigation revealed that the male had injuries consistent with an assault, not a collision.

On Friday, March 17, 2023, the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy on Ossama Ghaly, 44, and confirmed he died as a result of a stab wound. The manner of death is homicide.

Ian Whitford, 40, has since been charged with second degree murder in relation to Ghaly’s death.
