The Edmonton Police Service celebrates the graduation of new police recruits https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/RTC162GraduationJune132025 The Edmonton Police Service (EPS), Camrose Police Service and Lakeshore Regional Police Service proudly announce the graduation of 46 officers, marking the successful completion of an intensive training program and the beginning of their careers in law enforcement.&nbsp; <p><span>The recruit officers will formally graduate as part of Recruit Training Class (RTC) 162 at City Hall at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 13, 2025, with family, friends, colleagues and community representatives in attendance to celebrate the achievements of the newest members of the police service. The class of 46 includes 42 Edmonton officers, three Camrose officers and one Lakeshore officer.</span></p> <p><span>The officers of RTC 162 come from all walks of life, beginning their careers in other fields before making the transition into law enforcement. Their backgrounds vary and include other areas within law, the military, trades, and diverse experiences in the corporate world.&nbsp; There are officers from as far as Ukraine, Moldova, Philippines, Uganda, Nigeria, Russia, India, USA, UK and Australia. EPS is also proud that this class includes seven women, in addition to the Recruit Training Staff Sergeant Susan Tames, a Class Coordinator and the Valedictorian who are all women as well.</span></p> <p><span>“These recruits have demonstrated exceptional commitment, resilience and integrity throughout their training,” says Staff Sergeant Susan Tames, EPS Recruit Training Section. “They are ready to serve our community with professionalism and compassion, and we are proud to welcome them to the front lines of public safety.”</span></p> <p><span>During the course of training, the recruits of RTC 162 built positive interactions with the community, completing over 700 volunteer hours of their own time as part of their training. Kerry Bates with the EPS Traffic Safety Unit. “And with our 2025 fatal collisions already sitting at an unacceptable high of 15 in only the first half of the year, we are reminding Edmonton drivers that police are out enforcing traffic laws and charging those who choose to put everyone’s safety at risk.”</span></p> <p><span>Late in the evening on May 2, 2025, a 25-year-old male operating a 1989 Ford Bronco was attempting to do donuts on Roper road near 42 Street when a 22-year-old male operating a 2012 Yamaha sports motorcycle at a very high rate of speed struck the Bronco.&nbsp; The motorcycle operator was thrown from the bike, and sustained serious injuries. Charges are being laid.</span></p> <p style="text-align: center;"><span><iframe width="482" height="857" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QZPE5EEbwHY" title="Ford Bronco and motorcycle collision" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin"></iframe></span></p> <p style="text-align: center;"><strong><span>Video of May 2 collision between Ford Bronco and motorcycle at Roper Road and 42 Street</span></strong></p> <p><span>On the evening of Apr. 26, 2025, police were called to a three-car, speed-related collision in the area of 175 Street and 129 Avenue, an industrial area that is well known as a street racing location. Police arrived to find at least 100 people in the area, with many vehicles leaving the scene prior to police arrival. Charges are pending<span style="color: red;">. </span>No injuries were reported.</span></p> <p><span>In the afternoon on May 19, 2025, a Traffic Enforcement officer stopped a Ford Fusion travelling 162 km/h in the posted 80 km/h zone at Anthony Henday Drive and 91 Street. The 30-year-old male driver was issued a mandatory court summons and released on scene.</span></p> <p><span>“These are just a few examples of the extreme speeding, street racing and general dangerous driving we are seeing on our streets,” adds Sgt. Bates. “Fines for <em>Traffic Safety Act</em> violations such as stunting start at $567, not to mention a possible driver’s license suspension and, in the case of a <em>Criminal Code</em> violation like a dangerous driving charge, a criminal record.”</span></p> <p><span>In 2024, EPS received 1,251 complaints involving street racing and/or excessive speed. This year, 583 complaints have been made.</span></p> <p><span>While street racing charges were removed from the Criminal Code of Canada in 2018, police continue to lay charges for dangerous operation and issue tickets for stunting. In 2025 alone, EPS has issued 133 dangerous operation charges, and 76 stunting tickets. The EPS would like to thank the media and the public for their assistance. 12 Jun 2025 22:15:00 UT Police investigating homicide in north central Edmonton https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/homicidenwJun11 The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating a homicide that took place in north central Edmonton yesterday morning. <p><span>Around 7:20 a.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2025, Northwest Branch patrol responded to a weapons complaint at a residence in the area of 81 Street and 114 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located <strong>Morgan Cherish Taryn Giroux, 27,</strong> who was treated and transported to hospital by EMS, where she later succumbed to her injuries.</span></p> <p><span>A female youth was taken into custody at the scene but was later released. </span></p> <p><span>Earlier today, Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy on <strong>Giroux</strong> and determined she died as a result of a stab wound. The manner of death is homicide.</span></p> <p><span>EPS Homicide Section continues to investigate, and police are not looking for any suspects at this time. </span></p> 12 Jun 2025 22:00:00 UT Police investigating suspicious death in northwest Edmonton https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/SuspiciousDeathJune12 The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating a death that took place in northwest Edmonton earlier this week. <p><span>On Monday, June 9, 2025, at approximately 3:02 p.m., the EPS responded to a call to assist EMS with an injured 28-year-old male at a residence in the area of 89 Street and 149A Avenue. Upon arrival, police and EMS administered life-saving measures to the injured male; however, he was pronounced deceased on scene. </span></p> <p><span>After an initial investigation, police believe that the male was reportedly assaulted earlier in the day before he succumbed to his injuries. As such, the investigation has since been turned over to the EPS Homicide Section. </span></p> <p><span>On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the Edmonton Medical Examiner&rsquo;s Office completed an autopsy on the 28-year-old man and the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further testing.</span></p> 12 Jun 2025 20:15:00 UT Police lay charges in arson and threats investigation https://www.edmontonpolice.ca/News/MediaReleases/ArsonandthreatsJune12 <p><span>Between Feb. 29, 2024, and May 23, 2025, police received reports of eight incidents involving vehicle arsons, threatening notes, and online harassment. Most of the incidents happened early in the morning at homes in the areas of Silver Berry, Pollard Meadows, Laurel, Wildrose, and Summerside. Officers were able to identify a suspect, and an arrest was made on June 4, 2025.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Daman Khaihra, 25</span></strong><span>, is charged with <em>uttering threats to cause death (x13), disguise with intent, criminal harassment (x5), and arson (x4).</em></span></p> <p><span>Police continue to investigate. At this time there’s no known connection to Project Gaslight or previous arson investigations. There was one death as a result of shooting occurrences last month.
