The function of the EPS is to provide protection of life and property, preservation of public peace, prevention and detection of crime, regulation of non-criminal conduct as required by law, and perform services incumbent upon police as a social and community agency.
This is achieved through a Community Policing service delivery model. Community Policing is the delivery of effective and efficient policing services through a collaborative partnership with the citizens of Edmonton.
It is characterized by an appropriate balance of:
- Community consultation;
- Community partnerships;
- Prevention;
- Problem solving; and
- Response, investigation, and enforcement.
Success will be measured by a reduction in crime, a reduction in disorder, an increase in traffic safety, and a high level of public trust.
Each year, the EPS identifies and undertakes initiatives to help realize goals outlined in the current strategic business plan. Goals of the 2009 – 2011 Edmonton Police Strategic Business Plan include:
- Reduced crime and victimization
- A model of efficiency and effectiveness
- A citizen-centred police service.
There are 23 initiatives the EPS will undertake to meet its goals for 2010.
