Police believe Awet was last seen by his family on June 14, 2015 and last heard from when he called his family on June 17, 2015. He was reported missing on July 1, 2015.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner confirmed that the human remains located on March 21, 2016 in the area of 34 St and 257 Avenue were those of Awet.
