Fallen officer's legacy lives on at school bearing his name

For Immediate Release: 06-Jun-2025 @ 7:00 AM
MRU #: 25R049

To mark the 10th anniversary of Constable Daniel Woodall’s death, staff and students at the school that bears his name are honouring his legacy with a heartfelt assembly and tree planting.

“As a school, we are a living legacy of Constable Daniel Woodall through our promise to lead with kind hearts, fierce minds and brave spirits,” says Principal Leanne Moncrieff.  “Through this promise, we reflect Constable Woodall’s values and commitment to make the world a better place.”

Together with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), the school is celebrating the officer’s contributions to the community and presenting a new Legacy Award to a Grade 6 student who embodies the values of courage, service, and compassion that Constable Woodall lived by.

The tree planted outside the school will serve as a lasting symbol of Constable Woodall’s roots in the community, and a reminder that his spirit continues to grow in the hearts and actions of the next generation.

Constable Daniel Woodall was killed in the line of duty while attempting to arrest a hate crime suspect on June 8, 2015.  Following his death, citizens requested a school be named in his honour, and Edmonton Public Schools decided that a new elementary school would be built to recognize his service to the community.

In 2017, Constable Daniel Woodall School opened with a unique philosophy rooted in the officer’s values of safety, diversity, community, and belonging – values that continue to guide and inspire students today.

EPS Deputy Chief Nicole Chapdelaine encourages students to carry that spirit of leadership and goodwill in their hearts each day.

“You do not have to be a police officer to be like Constable Woodall – you can be kind, you can include others, and you can stand up for someone who needs help,” she says.  “That is what real heroes do, and you can too.”

From the school that carries his name to the young lives learning his values, Constable Daniel Woodall continues to lead even in his absence – reminding us that we all play a part in building a safer, more compassionate community.
