“Police officers aren’t just in the community, they’re part of it – they’re our neighbours, coaches, volunteers and mentors,” says Beverly Levis, Acting President of the Kiwanis Edmonton Oil Capital Club.
Beverly is encouraging community members and organizations to nominate police officers they work with for this year’s Kiwanis Top Cop Award.
“We want to go beyond the badge and recognize those selfless officers who volunteer because they genuinely want to make a difference in the lives of others, whether it’s helping those in need, supporting youth or contributing to a cause they believe in.”
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is honoured to partner with the Kiwanis Edmonton Oil Capital Club for the Top Cop Award and recognize officers for their outstanding dedication and volunteer contributions.
Since 1976, Kiwanis has acknowledged 48 EPS officers for their efforts working with community leagues, coaching sports, mentoring youth, supporting seniors, raising funds for charities or helping the less fortunate.
Award winners often volunteer in many different areas of the community. Last year’s recipient, Sgt. Ryan Katchur, not only coached a softball team but also mentored a robotics club that created 3-D printed Braille blocks and beeping Easter eggs for the CNIB to help visually impaired children. Ryan and the club later set up fun robotics camps at Bent Arrow to help kids build new skills in science and technology.
In recognition of this community spirit, Kiwanis donates $1,000 to the charity or non-profit organization of the award winner’s choice to help pay it forward and spread goodwill.
“EPS has programs to recognize the outstanding work of employees, however, when they receive the Top Cop Award from the community it’s especially meaningful and rewarding,” says Katherine Salucop, Executive Director of EPS Human Resources.
"Police officers are often quite humble about their volunteer work, but their commitment to giving back shows how deeply they care about the community beyond their duties, inspiring others to step up and make a difference too."
If you know a police officer who is deserving of this community award, please help us recognize them, and visit www.edmontonpolice.ca/kiwanis to submit your nomination before April 30, 2025.
