Investigators seek witnesses, tips related to statue theft

For Immediate Release: 03-Mar-2025 @ 11:30 AM
MRU #: 25R020

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is seeking witnesses and tips related to the theft of the Emily Murphy statue from the river valley park last month.

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, police were notified by the City of Edmonton that the bronze statue had been removed from Emily Murphy park as of Monday, Feb. 24. It was also reported to police that the stand-alone plaque positioned next to the statue was noted missing by City staff the week prior, on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Both the statue and plaque were last seen together and intact on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

“The statue was removed from the base using specialized cutting tools and, due to its weight, was likely moved out of the park using heavy duty transport equipment,” says Det. Mona Gill with the EPS Investigative Response Team (IRT). “We are hopeful that someone using the park after hours may have noticed this type of suspicious activity near the statue and can provide information that will assist with our investigation.”
