Of the total 1,259 traffic violations, a combined (automated and manned enforcement) 1,013 were solely related to speed. There were also 246 other violations, which included 65 red light violation infractions, 78 non-hazardous TSA infractions (equipment, documents etc.), 97 hazardous infractions (moving violations) and six distracting driving violations.
During the May 16 event, EPS Major Collision Investigations Section (MCIS) officers were conducting laser speed enforcement in the area of Whitemud Drive and 34 Street when they observed a silver 2023 Genesis G70 travelling 159 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. Officers conducted a traffic stop and the 25-year-old male driver was issued a mandatory court summons.
The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton coordinate regular enforcement campaigns throughout the year (such as Operation 24 Hours) to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways. May 14-20, 2024, was also Canada Road Safety Week, an enforcement-driven initiative led by the Canadian Associations of Chiefs of Police (CACP), designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures to save lives and reduce injuries on Canadian roads. This initiative focuses on a variety of behaviours that put road users at risk and is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025.
