On Saturday, Aug. 24, 2024, at approximately12 p.m. EPS officers stationed at the Americas Triathlon Cup racecourse witnessed a motorcycle drive around a police barricade and onto the closed racecourse at Groat Road southbound near River Valley Road. The motorcycle was then observed travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on River Valley Road while multiple athletes were still on the racecourse.
An officer on a marked EPS motorcycle with lights activated prepared to attempt a traffic stop in the area of River Valley Rd and 105 Street and, using radar, captured the motorcycle travelling at approximately 119 km/hr. The motorcyclist did not stop and swerved around the officer multiple times, fleeing through a red light on 105 Street and continuing eastbound weaving in and out of traffic on Rossdale Road. The last speed recorded by police radar captured the motorcycle travelling 138 km/h in the marked 50km/h zone. The officer did not pursue the motorcycle.
“These speeds are extremely dangerous for both the rider and the public, in particular on a closed racecourse with numerous pedestrians present,” says Staff Sergeant James McLeod with the EPS Traffic Enforcement Section. “Additionally, this rider put the EPS officers managing traffic at this event at significant risk.”
“While we were not able to capture a license plate number, we’re hopeful that someone may recall seeing this motorcycle and its rider and may be able to provide information that will help us identify them.”
The motorcycle is described as a solid black sport bike with a single white headlight, and the rider was reportedly wearing a black leather jacket, black leather pants, black boots and a black helmet with a silver pinstripe and a black tinted face shield. The motorcycle did not have a license plate.
Anyone with video of the incident and/or information about the motorcycle or its rider is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
