Couple facing murder charge in connection to death of 64-year-old male

An Edmonton couple are facing second-degree murder charges in connection to the death of a 64-year-old male in northeast Edmonton last weekend.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2024, Northeast Branch patrol officers responded to a suspicious death complaint at a residence in the area of 135A Avenue and 68 Street. An adult male and female contacted police to report the death of a male inside the residence.

Upon arrival, officers located a deceased 64-year-old male inside the home. Homicide Section investigators were called out to scene and determined the circumstances of the male’s death were suspicious in nature.

An autopsy completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, confirmed that the manner of death of 64-year-old Brian Rud of Edmonton is homicide. EPS Homicide Section detectives are not releasing the cause of death at this time for investigative purposes.

Matthew Battrick, 32, and Mary Gillard, 24, both of Edmonton, are each charged with second-degree murder.
