Making an impact on Indigenous youth for 10 years

12-Sep-2024

Oskayak Police Academy wraps up another successful year because of community support.

As we wrap up another successful year of the Oskayak Police Academy and celebrate its 10th anniversary, we are filled with gratitude and pride for the impact the program has had, all because of the support of EPS employees and community partners.

Reflecting on a decade of success

Oskayak stands as a beacon of collaboration and understanding in a world where strong police-community connections are rare.

Over the past decade, Oskayak has proven to be a groundbreaking initiative, bringing together Indigenous youth and EPS officers to explore each other’s worlds in a unique environment of friendship, learning, and mutual respect.

The success of the program is not measured solely by attendance or reports, but by the genuine relationships formed, and the ongoing support from past participants who continue to give back.  This impact can be clearly seen in the bright smiles of our youth and the pride reflected in their families' eyes.

These positive, long-lasting impressions left by Oskayak highlight its true value, demonstrating that when we invest in our youth, we are investing directly into our future.  Moreover, this work is making a meaningful difference in their lives, and creating ripple effects that will reach many more people in the years to come.

Acknowledgments and thanks

Many individuals and organizations have been instrumental in shaping Oskayak into the program it is today and must be acknowledged for their ongoing dedication and support.

First and foremost, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Edmonton Police Foundation for their steadfast support over the years.  Their funding has been crucial in sustaining this program and in allowing us to walk together with the Indigenous community on the path of reconciliation.

We are also deeply grateful to TD Canada Trust for their generous contributions this year, which have helped our youth start the school year with pride and excitement and new sneakers through Operation Kicks.  And, we appreciate this year’s fun go-cart experience made possible by Speeders Edmonton.

There are those from the Indigenous community who have helped us along this journey who need to be recognized as well: Elder Tom Snow, Elder Karen MacKenzie, the Edmonton Native Healing Centre, and our long-term partners from the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Centre.

We are also grateful to our planning committee and the many staff and volunteers who we could not do this without, including the members of the EPS Leadership Team who provided invaluable guidance and support from the very beginning.

Likewise, so many EPS areas have provided demonstrations and other fun activities to help Indigenous youth better understand policing: Recruit Training and Selection, Forensic Biology, Tactical, Canine, Air 1, Impact and Evaluation, HELP, Guard of Honour, and the EPS Blues Soccer Team.

Looking ahead

As we celebrate this 10-year milestone, we look forward to continuing our journey with renewed energy and commitment.

Oskayak is more than just a program, it is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together with purpose and passion.

Here’s to many more years of making a positive impact and fostering meaningful connections within our community!
