On Thursday, Sept. 17, 2026, at approximately 7 p.m., police members of the EPS Detainee Management Unit (DMU) entered the cell of a 27-year-old male detainee to start the release process.
The male was lying on the cell floor and did not respond to verbal communication. A vital sign check revealed he was unresponsive, not breathing, and did not have a pulse. The male was immediately removed from the cell and the on-duty paramedic started CPR. EMS and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services were called and continued to provide lifesaving measures. EMS declared the male deceased at 7:55 p.m.
The EPS submitted a 43.2 notification to the CEO of the Police Review Commission, who has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to conduct an investigation into the incident.
