ASIRT investigation police service vehicle collision

For Immediate Release: 22-May-2026 @ 7:15 PM
MRU #: AR26003

ASIRT is investigating after a woman was injured in a collision involving an EPS service vehicle.

Just before 11 p.m. on May 21, 2026, police observed a vehicle being driven in a dangerous manner around 137 Avenue and 66 Street. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver fled at a high rate of speed. Officers did not pursue. In the area of 118 Avenue, the driver lost control, travelled through a parking lot and struck a brick wall and garbage bin. The driver initially refused to exit the vehicle but was ultimately taken into custody and charged with criminal flight and dangerous driving.

A marked police vehicle responding with lights and sirens to assist with the above dangerous driving event was travelling east on 118 Avenue at Wayne Gretzky Drive when a collision occurred with another vehicle. The driver was taken to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, and an EPS member was treated for minor injuries.

Both collisions are under investigation by the EPS Major Collision Investigation Section.

The EPS submitted a 43.2 notification to the CEO of the Police Review Commission, who has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to conduct an investigation into the incident.

As such, the EPS cannot provide any additional information at this time. All further media inquiries should be directed to ASIRT.
