On May 11, 2026, EPS Southeast Patrol officers began investigating an assault with a weapon in the area of Knottwood Road and Mill Woods Road. It was reported to police that a 24-year-old woman was walking home at around 10:48 p.m. when she was approached by an unknown male suspect who stabbed her in an unprovoked attack before fleeing on foot. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police do not believe that the suspect and victim were known to one another.
John Cabeza Cuero, 19, was arrested by the EPS Investigative Response Team on June 8. He is facing charges for Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Assault with a Weapon. His next court date is June 17, 2026.
“We are thankful that the woman who was attacked did not sustain life-threatening injuries and that we were able to successfully locate and arrest the male suspect,” says Cst. Andrew Jarvis with the EPS Investigative Response Team. “Everyone has a right to be safe in our city, and we will continue to work closely with members of the public to investigate reported concerns, alongside our proactive policing efforts that are focused on maintaining safety in our shared spaces.”
