MRU #: H26R-17-1

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has laid charges against a 16-year-old male in relation to a homicide that occurred in the city's northeast this past weekend.

On Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, at approximately 6:50 a.m. police were called for reports of a shooting near 139 Avenue and 32 Street. Upon arrival, officers located a seriously injured 16-year-old female. The officers began administering first aid but unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased upon EMS arrival.

A 16-year-old male has since been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, and determined that the female’s death was a homicide. The cause of death was identified as a gunshot wound.

Pursuant to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, neither the accused nor the victim can be identified at this time.

"Any loss of life is tragic, but incidents involving young people are particularly heartbreaking," says Staff Sgt. Rob Bilawey of the EPS Homicide Section. "To the families, friends, and community members affected by this loss, we extend our condolences. While an arrest has been made, this case highlights the devastating consequences of youth violence and the importance of continued efforts by families, schools, community organizations, and law enforcement to support young people and prevent violence before it occurs."

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the homicide.
