Previously charged transport company found operating under new name

MRU #: TR25049

Edmonton Police Service Commercial Vehicles Investigations Unit (CVIU) has determined a transport company that was previously charged and fined more than $100,000 has been operating illegally.

On Dec. 5, 2023, CVIU officers completed an investigation into the operational records of Alberta North Transportation Ltd, a local company that transported large groups of people on private excursions, including students on school trips.

As a result, Alberta North Transportation was charged with 223 offences, including not having proper trip inspections, CVIP inspections, or log books. Though the company’s Safety Fitness Certificates were cancelled, they subsequently reopened under new names and continued operating illegally.

In collaboration with Alberta Transportation Investigation and Enforcement, CVIU officers have since determined that Alberta North Transportation is now operating under the name Northern Alberta Transportation. On Oct. 10, 2025 police seized one of the company’s buses, and continues to investigate. It is believed the company owns several buses, and may be continuing to operate illegally without a Safety Fitness Certificate.

“This company is one of the ‘chameleon’ carriers that Alberta Transportation has recently taken enforcement action against,” says Cst. Kyle Westergaard, with the EPS CVIU. “In this case, the company was continuing to transport busloads of passengers, including school-aged children, while failing to meet Alberta safety requirements.”

Consumers looking to book a passenger transportation carrier are encouraged to obtain the prospective company’s public profile by visiting the Alberta Transportation website.

Officers in the CVIU conduct commercial vehicle enforcement in accordance with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), a non-profit organization comprised of vehicle safety officials and industry representatives across North America.
