Two youth arrested and charged in ongoing Facebook Marketplace robberies

For Immediate Release: 18-Jun-2026 @ 11:38 AM
MRU #: 26R055

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged two male youths in relation to a string of Facebook Marketplace robberies that took place earlier this year.

Between early April and mid-May, officers with the EPS’ Southeast Branch began investigating approximately seven reports related to the theft of iPhones that were initially advertised on Facebook Marketplace. In each case, a suspect posed as a buyer, met with the seller and claimed they were seeking an iPhone for their family member. They evaluated the item(s) for sale and then robbed the seller of the item, often using bear spray, uttering threats or presenting a knife. These robberies happened in the Richfield and Millbourne areas, and the suspects reportedly fled on foot.

On June, 11, 2026, police arrested two males in relation to these incidents. As they are youths, police are unable to release their identities. Both male youths face a combined total of seven charges, including robbery (x4), breach of probation (x2) and assault with a weapon.

This year, police have received approximately 26 reports related to iPhone-related incidents exclusively on Facebook Marketplace resulting in seven arrests. Investigators say these incidents are continuing to take place citywide, and these crimes are being committed by multiple individuals who are not always connected.

Investigators also believe these crimes are severely under reported and are encouraging members of the public to contact police immediately if they have been victimized by crimes related to the buying and selling of goods on platforms like Facebook marketplace or Kijiji.

When arranging online sales meetups, Police are warning people to be vigilant and consider the following recommendations:

  • Do not meet in a secluded place or invite strangers into your home. Suggest meeting during the day at one of the EPS Buy and Sell Exchange Zones.
  • Ask the buyer/seller for photo ID. Take a photo of it for your reference.
  • Take screenshots of the advertisements, the advertisement ID number, the seller's/buyer’s contact information, and all communications.
  • Do not disclose to the seller how you will be paying if it's not necessary. If the seller is aware that you will be arriving with a large quantity of cash, it is an excellent opportunity for a personal robbery to take place.

“We are continuing to combat the theft of iPhones and other electronics through buy-and-sell platforms like Facebook Marketplace,” says Sgt. Cassandra Grant with the EPS’ Southeast Branch. “If you plan on buying items off these platforms, please be sure to remain vigilant and report anything criminal or suspicious to police immediately. These reports help us produce data and trends that greatly assist with ongoing investigations.”
