Police and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services investigating serious apartment fire

For Immediate Release: 14-Jul-2026 @ 2:02 PM
MRU #: 26R061

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) and Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) are investigating a collision and serious fire in a north central neighbourhood last night that resulted in at least one death.

At approximately 9:15 p.m., Monday, July 13, 2026, Northwest Branch patrol officers responded to a collision and fire at a mixed use commercial and residential complex in the area of 82 Street and 131 Avenue.  It was reported to police that a vehicle struck the building and ruptured a gas line, causing an explosion and subsequent fire.

Police immediately assisted residents exiting the building, while Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) began suppressing the fire.

Six residents were treated and transported by EMS to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The 62-year-old male driver of the vehicle was also treated and transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains in stable condition. An 85-year-old man jumped from a balcony and was treated by EMS; however, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on scene.

At this time, two residents of the building remain unaccounted for. In total, there were believed to be at least 35 people living in the 16-suite building. There were also four businesses located on the ground level of the complex. Twenty-one residents are currently receiving support from the Canadian Red Cross. The remaining residents were reportedly not in the building at the time but have been accounted for by police.

“This is a tragic event, and our condolences go out to the family, friends and loved ones of the gentleman who passed and those who remain unaccounted for at this time. Likewise, our thoughts are with those who have lost their homes or are now facing injuries or trauma related to this incident,” says EPS Chief Warren Driechel. “Due to the significant structural damage caused by the fire, it may take a considerable amount of time before emergency services can access the building to locate unaccounted for residents and pets who may have perished in the fire. At this time, we request patience as our partners at EFRS complete the difficult task of ensuring the location is safe and we will endeavor to commence our on scene work as soon as we can.”

“This was a complex and challenging second alarm fire, compounded by the gas leak. Our thoughts are with the victims and everyone impacted by this tragedy,” said Fire Chief David Lazenby. “Our crews arrived on scene promptly, launching critical search, rescue and suppression operations to bring the fire under control. I would like to thank all our emergency response partners for their support. I am proud of their bravery and professionalism under such difficult conditions.”

“My thoughts are with everyone affected by the devastating fire. My deepest condolences go to the family, friends and loved ones of the individual who has tragically lost their life. The impact on the community has been profound with the loss of homes, and businesses,” said Mayor Andrew Knack. “I would like to thank Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, Edmonton Police Services, City of Edmonton staff, including our ETS drivers for their swift and courageous response.”

Police continue to investigate the events that led to the fire.
