Of the total 323 traffic violations, 68 were related to speed. There were also eight distracted driving violations, 38 hazardous infractions (moving violations), 108 non-hazardous TSA infractions (equipment, documents etc.), one criminal code driving offence, and one criminal charge as a result of vehicle stops. There were 98 automated red-light violations.
"In just 24 hours, our traffic officers stopped 68 drivers for speeding,” says Staff Sergeant Rob Davis of EPS’s Traffic Services Branch. “Speeding remains one of the leading contributors to serious and fatal collisions. Whether there’s a camera or an officer nearby or not, drivers can control their own speed and improve road safety for everyone.”
Officers recently clocked a female driver at 105 km/h in a 50 km/h zone near Scona Road and 94 Avenue, resulting in a mandatory court summons.
“Every driver makes a choice the moment they press the accelerator,” says S/Sgt Davis. “Our goal is to combine education with enforcement to change behaviour before more tragedy strikes.”
EPS is urging drivers to take five minutes to see the real impact of dangerous driving at DeadSeriousYEG.com, which features local data, stories and resources.
Operation 24 Hours is one of several coordinated EPS and City of Edmonton enforcement campaigns planned throughout the year to improve traffic safety on Edmonton’s roadways.
