Protests disrupt traffic and emergency access in central Edmonton

For Immediate Release: 12-Oct-2025 @ 11:45 PM
MRU #: 25R081

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to safety concerns and make two arrests after a protest Saturday evening.

On October 11, 2025, around 5:15 p.m. the EPS received numerous calls from concerned citizens reporting a road blockade in the area of River Valley Road and 105 Street. The blockade involved a group of 50-100 individuals, some of whom were masked. Several calls came in to police from drivers and pedestrians in the area who expressed safety concerns as the protesters became increasingly agitated.

Traffic quickly became gridlocked, extending as far south as Walterdale Bridge and Walterdale Hill.

EPS officers quickly responded, established contact with the group, and took action to ensure the safety of the public. That included working to re-establish access for emergency vehicles by setting up road barricades and restricting movement along critical routes.

By 6:10 p.m., police had successfully restored limited traffic flow and designated a lane for emergency vehicles. The blockade was also cleared and the EPS members conducted investigations to identify those responsible for committing criminal or provincial offences related to the disruption.

“The Edmonton Police Service is committed to upholding the right to lawful protest. However, impeding roadways and obstructing access for emergency services poses significant risks to public safety and cannot be tolerated,” says A/Insp. Ian Brooks of the EPS Duty Officers Branch. “The EPS will continue to respond swiftly to restore order and ensure those responsible for compromising public safety are held accountable.”

Two people were arrested, and charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Anyone with any information about this or any other crime is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250
