Autopsy complete, charges laid following house fire death

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 20-year-old Edmonton woman with murder in relation to a death that took place following a house fire in the Montrose neighbourhood last Sunday.

On Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, at approximately 5:40 p.m., EPS Northeast Branch officers responded to a call from Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) seeking assistance. EFRS were responding to a residential house fire in the area of 59 Street and 119 Avenue when they located a deceased individual inside the home.

On Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s Office completed an autopsy on Javier Hull, 35, and determined he died as a result of multiple stab wounds and the manner of death was homicide.

EPS Homicide Section has since arrested and charged Ciana Hamelin, 20, with second degree murder and arson.
