For Immediate Release: 14-Oct-2026 @ 4:30 PM
MRU #: 26R078

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a man in relation to a tent slashing that occurred at the Heritage Festival.

On Aug. 3, 2026, at approximately 3 p.m., a male reportedly climbed the metal security fencing around the Israel pavilion at the Edmonton Heritage Festival and cut the tent with a knife. Security guards apprehended the suspect until on-site EPS members arrived and arrested him.

The EPS Hate Crimes Unit conducted a thorough investigation and found insufficient evidence to indicate that the crime was motivated by hate.

Abdimalik Jama, 29, has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on an Undertaking with conditions not to possess knives or other edged weapons.
