Police lay charges in relation to missing person investigation

For Immediate Release: 27-Mar-2026 @ 10:15 AM
MRU #: MP25R046-1

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a 47-year-old Prince Edward Island man in relation to the death of a missing woman.

Marika aka “Mika” Sutton, 29, who was last seen in early August 2025 in the Richfield neighbourhood in Mill Woods, southeast Edmonton. Marika was reported missing to the EPS on Sept. 25, 2025, by out of province family, and police immediately began investigating. A media release seeking the public’s assistance locating Marika was issued on Oct. 8, 2025.

By the end of October, investigations led police to believe that Marika was deceased, and her disappearance was criminal in nature. As a result, EPS Homicide Section assumed the investigation on Oct. 22, 2025, and on March 17, 2026, travelled to Charlottetown, P.E.I where they arrested and charged John Angus Joseph MacArthur, 47, with second degree murder and indignity to a body. MacArthur was transported back to Edmonton on March 20 and has since been remanded.

MacArthur and Sutton were known to one another and in an intimate partner relationship. While not formally reported to police, a history of domestic violence was uncovered during the investigation. As such, Marika’s death is considered an intimate partner homicide.

Investigators continue to search for Marika’s remains and believe that McArthur may have disposed of her body somewhere along Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe, Alberta between Aug. 22-29, 2025. MacArthur was driving a 2014 black Jeep Patriot at the time with Alberta license plate: CFB 2578.  A photo of his vehicle is included below.

“To protect the integrity of the investigation and secure the arrest of the accused, we deliberately chose to deviate from our normal process of immediately notifying the public of Marika’s death,” says Det. Braydon Lawrence with the EPS Homicide Section. “That being said, we are hopeful that someone travelling on Highway 2 between Wetaskiwin and Lacombe between Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 may recall seeing MacArthur’s Jeep in a strange or unusual location, and if so, we encourage them to contact us immediately.”

“Likewise, we are appealing to any landowners, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts who may frequent this area to be on the lookout for Marika’s remains.”

Investigators would like to thank the EPS Edmonton Drug and Gang Enforcement (EDGE) Team, the Calgary Police Services and the Charlottetown Police Service for their assistance with this investigation.

Anyone with information about Marika Sutton’s disappearance or death is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.
