In May 2025, police began investigating after Correctional Service Canada discovered a plan to introduce drugs and other contraband into the Edmonton Institution. Throughout the course of the investigation, detectives in the EPS Institution Investigation Unit learned that two suspects had made an agreement with an inmate to traffic drugs using drones.
On May 7, 2025, two suspects arrived at the Edmonton Institution in a rental vehicle. A search of their vehicle resulted in the seizure of approximately 328 grams of methamphetamine and 180 grams of cannabis resin packaged in plastic Kinder eggs, along with two drones, cellular phones and related equipment. The drugs had an estimated value of $336,000.

No charges were laid on the date of the vehicle search, as numerous investigative steps remained outstanding. More recently, in 2026, after all evidence had been collected and reviewed, Angelica Ager, 26 and Caleb Ganton-Tinker, 21 were each charged with conspiracy to commit possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Dakota Aubichon, 31, an inmate of the Institution, was also charged with conspiracy to commit possession for the purpose of trafficking and party to the offence of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
