Police lay charges in stabbing at Jasper Place School

For Immediate Release: 13-Apr-2026 @ 4:00 PM
MRU #: 26R034

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a male youth in relation to a stabbing at a west end school last Friday.

At approximately 11:58 a.m. on Friday, April 10, 2026, West Branch Patrol officers responded to the report of a stabbing at Jasper Place School in the area of 89 Avenue and 163 Street. It was reported to police that a 16-year-old male suspect confronted another 16-year-old male regarding a verbal argument that had taken place earlier in the day. The complainant reportedly attempted to walk away from the conversation when he was stabbed. Several youths attempted to restrain the suspect; however, he was able to break free and leave the school.

An EPS School Resource Officer (SRO) immediately arrived on scene, and assisted school staff with life-saving measures. EMS then treated and transported the male youth to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He has since been released from hospital and is recovering at home.

The school was immediately placed on lockdown and patrol officers quickly located the suspect nearby and took him into custody without incident. The 16-year-old male suspect has since been charged with offences of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, and criminal harassment.

“We are grateful for the immediate life-saving actions of school staff and our SRO, as well as the rapid response of our frontline patrol members and school partners,” says Staff Sergeant Derek Onysko with the EPS Youth Integrated Services Section.

“Thanks to their fast and unified actions, a dangerous situation was handled quickly and with care and school and community safety were swiftly restored.”
