Man charged in random stabbing

For Immediate Release: 03-Sep-2025 @ 3:29 PM
MRU #: 25R070

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has charged a man in a serious stabbing that occurred outside a northeast Edmonton store in August.

On August 28, 2025, at approximately 9:28 a.m., police responded to the report of an assault outside the Canadian Tire in the area of 96 Street and 162 Avenue. Investigators determined that as a 64-year-old male was exiting the store and loading his purchases into his vehicle, he was approached by an unknown male suspect, who stabbed him and then fled on a bicycle.

Witnesses were able to describe the suspect, and a 33-year-old male was later taken into custody on board an ETS bus in the area of Castle Downs Road and 104 Street. The victim was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The two men were not known to one another, and the attack was unprovoked.

The 33-year-old suspect, identified as Nathan Piche, has since been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, possess weapon for a dangerous purpose and attempted murder. Piche has a history of violent offences, including a manslaughter conviction after he stabbed a male in west Edmonton on June 10, 2018.

“The accused has repeatedly been convicted of violence, drug and weapons-related offences dating back to 2008, and has demonstrated a pattern of failing to comply with conditions,” says Acting Insp. Eric Stewart, with the EPS Investigations Branch. “Police are working with Alberta Crown Prosecution Service to advocate for his detention in the interest of public safety.”

Piche remains in custody at this time pending a bail hearing process.
