***Starting on December 1, 2025, the Police Review Commission (PRC) will independently investigate serious incidents, criminal allegations, and public complaints involving police in Alberta.
The PRC will have jurisdiction over criminal allegations involving all police services in Alberta. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will become part of the PRC and continue its mandate to investigate cases of death, serious injury, and “serious or sensitive” allegations involving police. ASIRT’s mandate will expand to include peace officers and legislative security officers. A new team of investigators within ASIRT will be responsible for criminal and statutory offences (for police only) that don’t meet the serious and sensitive threshold.
The PRC will also receive and investigate code of conduct matters under the Police Service Regulation involving officers working for municipal and First Nation police services. The RCMP, governed by the federal RCMP Act, will retain jurisdiction over public complaints involving its officers.
